Just released is The Fools’ Manual: a study and practice guide (Cascade Books, October 2019). It’s a crash course in making room. This companion guide offers chapter-by-chapter discussion questions, Bible reflections, and practice instructions that will change the way we see one another.
“We must be some kind of fools to be able to glimpse the wisdom of God,” Lee writes, but the need to do so is “deadly serious,” especially as political posturing, social prejudice, and xenophobia continue to dangerously divide our country and world. Lee’s books offer an alternative—and now actionable—vision for readers, lay leaders, and pastors who are committed to their church being a place of refuge amidst the rubble.
The core of the Manual is the “Practicing Foolishness” prompts for each session. They’ll lead you into specific, creative, and practical actions that will help you learn to make room for people you might have overlooked. Some are thought experiments. Some are conversation starters that range from easy to edgy, including some that will push you right out of your comfort zone.
As you practice, you’ll be invited to connect with others, using the hashtag #FoolishChurch on social media, so that we all might learn together. Don’t forget to check for others’ ideas posted there as well. Lee will collect the best of these and share them periodically on her blog.
Lee’s books are available through various online sellers including Amazon, Wipf and Stock, or Cokesbury, or–if you see Lee in person–you can get a copy through her for $8 (including sales tax).
